The usual adult (adult dog or cat) dose recommended by the British Veterinary Association is 0.03 mg per kg body weight， with an upper limit of dosage of 0.45 mg for adults. For small-breed puppies under six months old， the same authority recommends that they should receive up to two one hundredth of this amount i.e. 9×10−6 μg/kg bodyweight. The BVA’s recommendations are based on research carried out on animals weighing between 2.7 kg and 8 lb. As such， the above doses must be treated as minimum recommended dosages which may need to be increased depending upon individual animal requirements. In order to prevent recurrence of attacks when there has been a prolonged absence of symptoms after atropine therapy， all affected pets should continue to take it for several weeks after the last attack has occurred.
In cases where atropine is given to treat acute attacks of POTS， its effectiveness will diminish rapidly unless further injections are given regularly throughout the day. In these circumstances， treatment should follow the guidelines below. A single injection containing sufficient atropine to reduce pupil size from normal to about one millimetre diameter can be safely injected into most areas of muscles available for local injection. This includes buttocks， tail head and base， thighs， flanks， abdomen， anterior tibial and posterior tibial regions beneath the knees， plantar surfaces of the feet， lateral malleolus and other appropriate sites for ease of access. However， if large volumes of intravenous fluids have recently been used， the veins might not be accessible or even present due to collapse of the veins. Similarly， during surgery in which large amounts of saline has been infused， the vein(s) would also be difficult to find. Therefore， caution must always be taken before injecting into any site
